Can I use a Sony receiver with Phillips speakers?
I have a Phillips Home theater system right now- however, I need a new receiver that will sync with my Bravia TV and my Ps3. Sony makes a receiver that has the Bravia sync. The thing is, my phillips speakers aren’t regular speaker wire, they have like the little plugs to plug into the back of my Phillips system. If I cut that plug off and stripped the wire, would I be able to use those speakers with a Sony receiver??
Generally – No.
Phillips does NOT make speakers to be compatible with any electronics but their own. This is why we never recommend the $199 box home theater systems as you cannot swap parts in/out.
Look on the back of the speakers. If they say 8 ohm or 6 or even 4 – you could probably cut the plugs off and use them. But to get impressive power numbers – these speakers are often 4,3 or even 2 ohms which is close to a short circuit.
Also – forget the “Brava Sync” thing. This is just a gimmick to get you to only buy Sony products.
Look into the Onkyo TX-SR or Yamaha RX-V series of receivers. Much better quality and compatible with lots of gear including your TV and PS3.
