If I buy a 1080p Cable for my PS3 for about £50+ then will I get a better picture?
Hi. I have a 40inch Sony Bravia LCD TV that I bought about 6 months ago and I just bought a PS3 as well. I bought a 1080i HDMI cable for it the other day for £15. I have watched some Blu Ray films and I’m not sure the picture is the best plus the graphics don’t look that great. On the display settings on the PS3 it will check to see how high it will go up to on the display like 720p, 1080i and 1080p. The 2 that get ticked is the 720p and the 1080i. If I bought a 1080p cable for about £50+ then will the display settings on the PS3 go up to 1080p and will I get a better picture on the Blu Ray films?
HDMI cable is just HDMI cable. Any so-called distinction such as 1080p (not broadcast in the UK anyway) is a mere salesman’s puff.
The difference in price between the HDMI cables on sale is analogous to the difference in price between different SCART cables. Nobody ever attempted to differentiate them by claiming that one was suitable for RGB or S or Composite etc.
For more money all you get is thicker gold plating on the connecters (so they last longer without corroding); the materials will be tougher so the conductors are less likely to break when the cable is flexed; a longer cable will perform better; the internal screening will be better… and so on.
In itself, the more expensive cable won’t get you a better picture unless you’re at risk of electronic interference pick up, need a long cable or you bend the thing a lot.
£50 seems like a lot of dosh for an HDMI cable. £40 for 150mm from Maplin is more in order.
